Ferrero accelerates sustainability

The Ferrero Group has reaffirmed its commitment to a more sustainable future, achieving concrete results in the field of packaging, as highlighted in its newly released 2024 Sustainability Report. The global confectionery group has reached a major milestone: over 92% of its packaging is now designed to be recyclable. The company continues to work towards its ambitious target of ensuring that more than 90% of its packaging materials are reusable, recyclable or compostable.

A key pillar of Ferrero’s strategy is the reduction of virgin plastic, supported by innovative design solutions and the adoption of more circular materials. A prime example is the transformation of its iconic Ferrero Rocher boxes from polystyrene to polypropylene in North America and China, resulting in an estimated saving of around 11,000 tonnes of plastic. This is complemented by pioneering developments such as the launch of Nutella Plant-Based in jars made from 60% recycled glass, and the introduction of a paper spoon for Kinder Joy, replacing the traditional plastic version.

Sustainability informs every design decision we make,” the Group stated, “with the aim of combining functionality, food safety and environmental responsibility. The innovations we are implementing not only reduce environmental impact but also help educate and engage consumers in making more conscious choices.”

Ferrero’s progress in packaging is part of a broader environmental strategy, which includes a commitment to halving greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. Tangible results have already been achieved: a 21.7% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions compared to the 2017/18 baseline, and 90% of electricity used in manufacturing and logistics now comes from renewable sources.

Ferrero continues to assert its role as a responsible global player, capable of innovating across the entire value chain – from ingredient sourcing to packaging design – seamlessly integrating sustainability, quality and business continuity.
