Packaging and new EU regulations: BASF expands the ecovio® range

BASF is expanding its ecovio® portfolio - the certified compostable biopolymer designed for the circular economy - by introducing new certified compostable grades for flexible packaging with high barriers against oxygen, moisture, grease, and liquids. The new solutions are designed to meet sustainability requirements without compromising industrial performance or product protection.

The new ecovio® grades enable packaging manufacturers and FMCG brands to tailor barrier performance according to specific applications, existing production technologies, and national and European regulatorytory frameworks, while also enabling one or more end-of-life options, such as organic recycling or paper recycling. This approach aims to reduce the trade-offs between sustainability, food safety, and industrial continuity.

With the expansion of the ecovio® range, we are providing the flexible packaging value chain with solutions that can be certified up to Home Compostable level, enabling manufacturers and brands to adapt to the new regulatory environment without sacrificing industrial efficiency, product safety, or competitiveness - said Fabio Perrotta, Account Manager Biopolymers – South Europe at BASF.

From a manufacturing perspective, the new grades are designed to be processed on existing equipment through extrusion, coating, or lamination in mono- and multilayer structures. This allows companies across the value chain to limit investment costs and transition times while maintaining performance levels comparable to conventional solutions.

Depending on the substrate and packaging design, paper- and paperboard-based packaging can be recycled through traditional paper recycling streams or organically recycled if contaminated with food residues. The new ecovio® grades are available with up to 80% bio-based content or with certified bio-attributed content based on the biomass balance approach.
