Erion Packaging, the non-profit Consortium of the Erion System dedicated to the management of packaging waste from technological products, collected more than 36,000 tonnes of waste across Italy in 2025, marking a +46% increase compared to 2024 (when the total was approximately 25,000 tonnes).
At the same time, the amount of recycled packaging waste also grew significantly: from around 23,000 tonnes in 2024 to over 30,000 tonnes in 2025, representing a +32% increase year-on-year.
In particular, the Consortium achieved an overall recycling rate of 76.5% of the total packaging placed on the market by its members, compared to a legal target of 65%.
By material, 76.3% of paper packaging placed on the market was recycled (against a regulatory target of 75%); plastic reached 70.7% (versus a 50% target), and wood achieved 84.1% (against a 25% target).
This result was made possible by the continuous strengthening of partnerships with recycling operators, the expansion of agreements with companies capable of generating significant volumes of packaging waste within the Consortium’s scope, such as manufacturing plants, logistics operators, distributors and installers, and the growth of the Consortium’s membership base. In 2025, 33 new companies joined Erion Packaging, leading to a 37% increase in the total volume placed on the market, which reached approximately 40,000 tonnes.
More specifically, the proper treatment of the packaging waste managed by Erion Packaging enabled the recycling of over 19,000 tonnes of paper, equivalent to 3.8 billion A4 sheets. Of these volumes, 84% came from the industrial and commercial sector, which nearly doubled its quantities compared to the previous year.
The most significant increase compared to 2024 was recorded in the plastic fraction, with over 6,000 tonnes recycled (more than 5,300 tonnes from the commercial and industrial sector), equivalent to approximately 2.4 million garden chairs. In addition, around 4,400 tonnes of industrial wood were recycled, all originating from the commercial and industrial sector, corresponding to approximately 220,000 pallets.
In view of the implementation of the new European Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), scheduled to apply from 12 August 2026, Erion Packaging is expected to play an increasingly strategic role in the management of packaging linked to technological supply chains.
