Stadler inaugurates its lightweight packaging sorting plant in Austria

Stadler has delivered one of Europe's most advanced automated recycling facilities for PreZero Sorting in Sollenau (Austria), combining high-performance technology, cutting-edge AI integration and sustainable design to support Austria's circular economy objectives.

The project
The facility represents the most complex and largest structure ever built by Stadler. For PreZero, an international company within the Schwarz Group specialising in environmental services, the Sollenau project constitutes a strategic investment aimed at strengthening Austria's local recycling infrastructure. The site selection bridged a geographical gap, reducing transport and emissions. The plant, designed to process 104,500 tonnes annually across two modules, combines innovation and scalability.

Implementation complexity
Realisation required advanced technical expertise and precise coordination between multiple teams and operational phases, with installation commencing before completion of the building construction. Commissioning was completed on schedule by summer 2025.

Advanced technology
At the heart of the facility is a highly integrated and automated sorting system capable of processing domestic lightweight packaging, plastic bottles and waste from commercial streams. Thirty-five Steinert NIR (near-infrared) separators have been installed. The system integrates AI-based BatterySort for early detection and safe removal of hazardous batteries, a key innovation for fire prevention.

Fourteen volumetric sensors developed in-house by Stadler constantly monitor material flow, enabling real-time adjustments and operational stability. The system dynamically adapts to material variations, optimising sorting capacity and quality whilst minimising manual intervention.

Sustainability impact
The facility will contribute significantly to improving regional recycling, increasing precision and material recovery. In a context of stricter environmental regulations and growing demand for resource efficiency, the Sollenau plant represents a future-oriented recycling model: scalable, intelligent, safe and sustainable.
